Have you ever polished off a delicious meal, only to be rewarded with a symphony of digestive woes? Bloating, gas, stomach cramps – the after-party gets a little less fun when your body seems to be throwing a tantrum against the very food you just consumed.


Food intolerances can be a frustrating and often confusing health issue. While food allergies trigger a more serious immune response (think hives, swelling, or anaphylaxis), food intolerances can leave you feeling confused and frustrated. Unlike allergies, they don't involve the immune system directly, but they can still wreak havoc on your digestive system.


If you’ve been experiencing digestive discomfort, bloating, or other unpleasant symptoms after eating, you might be dealing with a food intolerance. But how can you tell for sure? This blog will guide you through the signs to look out for, common culprits, and how to take steps towards improving your digestive and gut health.


Understanding Food Intolerances

What is a Food Intolerance?

Food intolerance occurs when your digestive system cannot properly break down certain foods.


Here are some clues that might point towards a food intolerance:


  • The Delayed Reaction:  Food allergies come on fast and strong, while intolerances can take hours or even days to manifest their unpleasant effects.

  • The Digestive Drama:  Bloating, gas, cramps, diarrhea, and constipation are all potential signs that your body isn't happy with a particular food.

  • The Skin Woes:  Food intolerances can sometimes show up on your skin in the form of breakouts, eczema, psoriasis or rashes.

  • The Aches and Pains: If you notice more joint pains and swelling when you grab a burger or polish off a tub of icecream, you're not alone. One-third of people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) say certain foods worsen their symptoms.

  • The Foggy Fog:  Do you experience fatigue, headaches, or brain fog after eating certain foods? This could be a sign of intolerance.


Identifying Food Intolerances

Identifying and managing food intolerances can be challenging, especially when trying to balance a busy lifestyle. As a nutrition and health coach, I specialise in helping clients navigate these issues and develop personalised plans to improve their digestive and gut health.

Keeping a Food Diary

One of the most effective ways to identify food intolerances is by keeping a detailed food diary. Track everything you eat and drink, along with any symptoms you experience. This can help you identify patterns and pinpoint problematic foods.

Elimination Diet

An elimination diet involves removing suspected foods from your diet for a period of time, usually 2-4 weeks, and then gradually reintroducing them one at a time. This process can help you determine which foods are causing your symptoms. Common foods to eliminate include dairy, gluten, soy, eggs, nuts, and certain fruits and vegetables. * You should NEVER proceed with an elimination diet on your own, get in touch for support with undertaking this process.

Food Intolerance Tests

While not always necessary, some people find it helpful to take food intolerance tests. These tests can identify specific intolerances, though it’s important to note that they should be used in conjunction with other methods with the support of a nutrition coach.
